Albany Medicaid providers received $2,192,160 for medicine services and procedures in 2024

Albany’s Medicaid providers collected $2,192,160 in payments for Medicine Services and Procedures in 2024, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Medicaid Provider Spending data show. That total grew 167.3% compared to 2023, when $819,992 was billed for similar services.

Administered by the states and funded jointly by federal and state governments, Medicaid covers low-income families and individuals, seniors, children, and people with disabilities, making it one of the largest segments of the nation’s health care system.

Because taxpayer funding finances Medicaid, shifts in billing at the local level indicate how public health care spending changes within a community.

The “Medicine Services and Procedures” grouping comprises Medicaid-covered services identified by care type, using standardized HCPCS and CPT code sets. In this reporting, each billing code aligns with one service category based on uniform prefixes and code ranges, ensuring similar services are grouped and avoiding double counting for accurate year-over-year comparisons.

In 2024, Medicine Services and Procedures led all service categories in Albany by total Medicaid payments, coinciding with broader spending growth across other categories.

For Indiana overall, the Medicine Services and Procedures category ranked No. 2 statewide by payments last year.

From 2019 to 2024, Medicaid funds tied to the Medicine Services and Procedures category in Albany increased $2,191,668, up 445,279.9%. The pace of growth was especially pronounced in 2021 and 2023.

Although these procedures were billed citywide, most payments concentrated in a handful of ZIP codes. Among them, ZIP code 47320 recorded $2,192,159 of Medicaid payments for this category during 2024. That code represented all Medicaid claims for Medicine Services and Procedures in Albany over the year.

Payment activity within the Medicine Services and Procedures group was also focused among relatively few billing codes.

In comparison, medicine services payments in Albany saw a 167.3% uptick between 2023 and 2024, exceeding the 161% growth noted across all Medicaid claim categories locally.

These adjustments are anticipated to place greater cost burdens on states and slow the expansion of federal Medicaid funding even as the program continues providing coverage to tens of millions.
