MPD Swears in Two Honorary Junior Officers
Josiah and Lyle Bulger, ages 8 and 6, have always loved police officers. According to their mother Rosi, “When the boys got to kindergarten, they asked them what they wanted to be when they both grew up, and they both said ‘Police!’” The boys got to live out their dream on Friday, when Mayor Dan Ridenour swore them in as honorary Junior Officers.
The idea came from Officer Ron Locke, who goes to church with the family. “At first, I was just going to have IDs made up with their names on them, but Chief Sloan wanted to do something really special,” explained Locke. “When I was a little boy, it was my dream to be a police officer, but I never had this kind of guidance.”
Police Chief Nate Sloan reached out to the Mayor’s office about setting up a swearing in. “It’s exciting when we get to do that sort of thing,” said Sloan. Lyle and Josiah were invited to the Mayor’s Office to be sworn in as honorary junior police officers, complete with hats, badges, and a framed certificate. Both boys took a mini Oath of Office and had donuts with the mayor and the officers before taking a tour.
Taylor Bulger, the boys’ father, thanked the mayor and police department for carving out time. “We really hope this is something that will leave a lasting impression and really give a trajectory for their lives,” he commented. Taylor works as a carpenter, and Rosi works from home.
“I thought I started working young, but these two are really getting an early start!” laughed Mayor Ridenour. “And we need them,” he added. “It’s great to see the next generation choosing excellent role models.”
