New York Times Bestselling Author to Speak at Ball State University, March 20

The New York Times best-selling author Kathryn Aalto—a landscape historian, garden designer, and teacher—will speak at Ball State University on March 20. The presentation, free and open to the public, starts at 5 p.m. in Room 175 of the Art and Journalism Building on the University’s Muncie campus.

Ms. Aalto focuses on those places where nature and culture intersect, teaching the literature of nature and place, designing artful and sustainable gardens, and writing about the natural world. Her most recent book—Writing Wild: Women Poets, Ramblers, and Mavericks Who Shape How We See the Natural World—explores the lives, literature, and landscapes of 25 classic, new, and overlooked female nature writers, including Indiana’s own Gene Stratton-Porter.

An American based in Exeter, England, Ms. Aalto considers the question, “How best to live in this world?” at the heart of her nature writing. In her work as a garden designer, her gardens are mindfully designed to enhance mental and physical health. 

Ms. Aalto’s March 20 visit is hosted by Ball State’s Honors College and is co-sponsored by the University’s departments of English and Landscape Architecture, and Women’s and Gender Studies Program; and the Robert Cooper Audubon Society.
