Muncie Community Schools recently issued the following announcement.

MCS rewards employees with $2,000 stipends

The Muncie Community Schools (MCS) Board of Trustees has approved $2,000 stipends for all full-time MCS employees while part-time employees will receive $1,000. The stipends are to reward employees for the additional work and the added stress of educating students while dealing with COVID-19 for the second consecutive year.  

“We have incredibly dedicated teachers, administrators and support staff,” MCS Director of Public Education and CEO Lee Ann Kwiatkowski said. “For the school board to recognize their efforts for the second straight year in such a generous way is a powerful statement of support, and should tell our families what kind of people we have serving on our board.”

Last year’s stipend came from the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) Fund, a stimulus funding stream authorized as part of the Coronavirus Response and Relief Appropriations Act. This stipend will be paid from the MCS Education Fund and be distributed during the district’s next payroll on April 20.

“The work that’s been done throughout the district has created a stability for MCS in a time of instability,” Dave Heeter, a member of the board’s Compensation Committee, said. “The people who are working in every (MCS) building need to know that we appreciate all that’s happened.

“The ability to be able to do this is significant,” he said. “The Compensation Committee did not feel it would put the school system in any detrimental position.”

MCS employees who have been hired after the start of the second semester will receive a pro-rated stipend based on time spent working.
